Thank you to Paramount for Trek

A very grateful thank you to Paramount Pictures for taking on a science fiction show that was cancelled after three seasons, but which proved to have legs :)

Chris Pine What Are You Doing?

Chris Pine, our new Captain Kirk in the reboot Star Trek movie franchise, was convicted of driving under the influence in New Zealand on Monday after being arrested on March 1 for having a blood alcohol level over the legal limit.  This story has so many tragedies it is hard to know where to begin.

Most obvious - if you have been drinking, do not get behind the wheel.  Especially when the bar has designated drivers for party goers to take advantage of.  That's tragedy number one.  Tragedy number two - there are eighty cast mates, crew members and friends who should have taken the keys from a friend.  Why didn't you?  Tragedy three - the media circus at the courthouse when Chris Pine arrived for his day in court.  I felt sorry for the guy having to walk the gauntlet to get in and out of court - and it was very kind of him to sign autographs for fans on what was probably one of the worst days of his life.  Tragedy four - while I understand that he probably wants to go back to hiding and recuperating from this nightmare, being an introvert caught in an ugly international media spotlight, he has not personally issued an apology statement. Statements by your representation in court do not count for much.

I covered the story over at my tumblr blog as it broke, following a reporter who was tweeting from inside the court room.  I run a Star Trek blog.  When actors who have worked on Trek screw up or do something spectacularly fantastic, I cover it.  I think I provided an accurate, reasonable and (frankly) favorable account of what happened.  Having worked on two Star Trek shows and for Paramount Pictures for a decade, I view myself as Trek extended family.  Family has each other's backs.  You do what you can to take care of your own.

So I say again - please make an apology statement, and not something written by a PR team.  Drunk driving is such an emotional topic.  No matter how messed up our celebrity-worshiping society is, people are disappointed. I am only summarizing what I hear repeatedly from the fandom.  If any of my readers know him (and I know some of you do) please pass this advice along.  I hope that he takes this last step to mend fences.

I hope this doesn't impact his future work prospects, they way similar incidents have ruined or waylaid the careers of others.  Fortunately, he has actual acting talent to fall back on.  Maybe that character acting career he has said he would prefer is within reach if he is no longer in demand as a leading man.  I personally just hope he has a career when this is behind him.  Paramount has been less than forgiving when their leading men mess up.  Remember Shia?

Good luck, Chris Pine, you're going to need it.

Baby Love

Just a little something I wrote today.  I posted it elsewhere anonymously, so I want it noted as mine.

Baby Love

Stand at the seashore and
Make a wish
For a thousand sleepless nights
And endless tears
And endless joy
And a dream come to fruition
Stand by the cradle and
Laugh with delight and cry in despair
As your heart walks around
Outside your body
Leaving you vulnerable
And stronger than you ever thought you could be
Stand by the rocking chair and
watch your two beloveds
dissolve into peaceful dreams
where one travels to distant lands
and two know they cannot follow
already

"Mornings" by Kerry A. Vill

"Mornings"

Time to wake up
Get out the door
My eyes are angry slits on my face
Above my mouth, tight as a prune
Jaw muscles bunching
Teeth grinding
Shoulders somewhere near my ears
Rigid muscles down my back
Take a deep breathe
Breathe in peace
Breathe out release
This too shall pass
Clear your face
Turn around
Have a good rest of the day
You’re late, hurry
The door slams
Pull away
Crank up the music
Loud so the car shakes
Give me a beat
Breathe, breathe
Let the tension melt away
Dissolve into music notes
No more white knuckles on the steering wheel
Shake it out
Three hours after waking
Late to work

Again

My Epic, Awesome Personal Dating Ad

me, duh
So it's Valentine's Day.  With that in mind, I have decided to post an "Epic, Awesome Personal Dating Ad".  I have no idea how to meet someone special, so I just started writing and this is what happened and I am tossing it out there to the universe.  Feel free to forward it.  Here we go…

I seek a kind, generous and brave person with similar values, interests and background.  I seek someone who is creative, altruistic, intelligent, honest and complicated.  I am pansexual, which for me means that I am looking mostly for a brunette with blue-green-grey eyes who has the above-mentioned personal qualities.  Gender is irrelevant.  I currently live in Eugene, but I would be willing to relocate (eventually) to Portland or Ashland, Oregon, or relocate back to Los Angeles for the right person.

If you have kids also, that’s great; I like kids of all ages.  I am the mom of a brilliant, challenging and exceptional special needs ten year old son.  I also live with a cat that I serve and obey.  It is essential that you genuinely like kids and family life for a relationship to work because that is a priority to me.

Words that describe me include idealistic, intelligent, compassionate, intense and complex. I have the ability to curse like a sailor as the need arises or if I just fucking feel like it.  I am spiritual and ethical, but not at all religious.  I have an incurable and insatiable drive to make the world a better place.  I am a great cook, a music lover, and an enthusiastic but neglectful gardener.  I read voraciously and love the theater, concerts and cultural events. I like sci-fi movies and action flicks, but I have a secret soft spot for romances like Sense & SensibilityNotting Hill, the intro of Up and The Terminator.  I have a wicked sense of humor, but people seem to like it, or they run away and it’s not an issue.

this is NOT me
After college, I escaped to Hollywood where I fell unexpectedly in love with film and television production. I am incredibly proud of having worked on Star Trek: Deep Space NineStar Trek: First Contact, and ellen (among many other shows and movies).  I currently work as a preschool teacher and at a non-profit that supports families with special needs children here in Eugene.  My mind insists that I am 35 years old but my birth certificate says I am 45.  I am 5’4”, curvy, solid and strong and am a brunette with brown eyes.   “Old enough to know better and young enough not to care” is definitely applicable.

I want to wake up next to my beloved and compare morning bed-head hair, make pancakes every Saturday for breakfast and create a home refuge where the laughter of happy children is a constant background noise.  I have enjoyed being single, but now want a down-to-earth romance with someone special for the rest of my life.  I am a bit scared to be doing this.  I am doing it anyway.  Synchronicity is afoot, and I must see where she leads.

Email me at intrepid.infj@yahoo.com and let’s talk.

So, there it is

Happy Birthday, Simon Pegg!

Happy Birthday to the amazingly talented Simon Pegg!  Hope you have a fantastic day!

Paul Walker and Reach Out Worldwide

I liked Paul Walker.  He was in one of my favorite movies, Timeline.  And I had no idea this was going on.  He started a charity organization called Reach Out Worldwide, which transports volunteers to areas affected by catastrophic disasters in order to provide assistance.  THIS is the power of celebrity used correctly.  Well done, sir.  RIP.

Kids Are Weird

Had my 15 minutes of fame this morning.

I called in to a local radio station when they asked "how have you been injured by common items" after they related a story of a woman injured by a thrown french fry that lacerated her cornea.

Here's our story.

A few years ago, my son stuck a popcorn kernel into his ear.  Why?  I have no idea.  He stuck it in his "hearing" ear - he is functionally deaf in the other.  I was not able to pick it out (with tweezers, on an embarrassed, wiggly and uncooperative special needs 6 year old kid, probably a bad idea), so I had to take him (on Friday night, of course) to the nearest ER in McMinnville, Oregon, to get it out.  Three nurses had to hold down my screaming son, and the utterly inept ER doctor tried to get it out by scraping the ear canal with a little spoon-like tool, causing my son's ear to gush blood.  After a few attempts (looked like he was trying to scoop ice cream), he gave up and said, "Uh, sorry, I can't get it out and now there's too much blood to see it".  He then said we'd have to go to Portland to Doernbecher's Children's Hospital at OHSU to get it looked at.

So on Saturday, we drove the 2 hours up to Portland, OR.  The took one look at his mess of an ear and declared it was too swollen and bloody to do anything with it, and sent us home with instructions to come back on Monday.

On Monday, we again drove the 2 hours up to Portland and another 2 nurses and I had to restrain him in order for the doctor to try to remove the popcorn kernel.  No luck and my son was in hysterics.  They told us to go home and scheduled him for day surgery on Friday because he obviously wasn't going to cooperate.

On Friday, we drove back up to Portland, put my son under anesthesia for literally 2 minutes and dug the kernel out.  Doernbecher's was fantastic (http://www.ohsu.edu/xd/health/services/doernbecher/), but three ER visits and surgery was not what I thought would happen over a popcorn kernel!

Kids are weird.  The DJ thought the story was hilarious and so it was aired live.  Now half of Eugene knows what a goof my kid is :)

What Chris Pine Did in 2013

Wrapping up my series on what each Star Trek cast member of every series did in 2013, we come to the last person, Chris Pine - and I saved him for last because 1) he's my favorite I admit, and 2) his movie Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit premiere was last night and it goes wide tomorrow (and timing is everything).  So many excellent pictures and media goodness to see and share!  Enjoy!

In 2013, Chris starred in Star Trek Into Darkness (as Captain James T. Kirk) and did a voice over for the Star Trek online video game.  He worked on several other movies made in 2013 for a 2014 release - Into the Woods (co-starring as Cinderella’s Prince), Stretch (co-starring as The Billionaire), and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (starring as Jack Ryan).  He is currently filming Horrible Bosses 2(co-starring role).  He was also featured in The Captains Up Close, a Canadian mini-series on the captains of Star Trek, hosted by William Shatnerhttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt2862034/?ref_=nm_flmg_slf_1
He was in Paul McCartney’s music video for his song “Queenie Eye” – check it out at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CfLUmVso30 and “The Making of Queenie Eye” here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSAc7JNx2PA).  I am not sure who I’m more jealous of – Chris Pine or Paul McCartney.  Chris also was featured in another music video, “All I Want” for the band The Ivy Walls athttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2C6L3bZ3jk.  He also voices several BMW ads - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icB50cs9AJA – and others here on the BMW USA YouTube channel http://www.youtube.com/user/BMWUSA/videos.
He had appearances on Vivir de cine, Alaska y Mario, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Entertainment Tonight, Weekend Ticket, Big Morning Buzz Live With Carrie Keagan, The Late Show With David Letterman, Chelsea Lately and The Graham Norton Show.  Chris was a presenter at the 2013 MTV Movie Awards, and the 85th Academy Awards Show, and was featured in the Star Trek Into Darkness TV documentary.
Chris is in pre-production on Z for Zacharia, which is set to shoot in New Zealand, possibly as soon as late January 2014.
He has dozens upon dozens of interviews on YouTube, and many interviews online at various websites.  I have listed his magazine covers in another post - there are too many to list and they are nice to look at and I’ll get distracted.
Chris does not participate in any social media (and has been outspoken in his disdain, which is a shame).  Personally I think that he should reconsider this stance and speak up; I like what he has to say and I know others do also.  The best fan made website for him is http://chris-pine.org/.
His movie Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit comes out in theaters tomorrow.  I hope it’s very successful and that Chris gets lots of kudos for it!  I can’t wait to see it this weekend (if I can find a babysitter, LOL).

Here are some of Chris' magazine covers in 2013 - http://startrekintorelevance.tumblr.com/post/73516414877/chris-pine-magazine-covers-in-2013-my-two and http://startrekintorelevance.tumblr.com/post/73516355678/chris-pine-magazine-covers-2013-2-of-4-posts and http://startrekintorelevance.tumblr.com/post/73516282145/chris-pine-magazine-covers-2013-3-of-4-posts and http://startrekintorelevance.tumblr.com/post/73516209798/chris-pine-magazine-covers-2013-4-of-4-posts.

[If you are interested in the Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit Los Angeles premiere pictures, I published the best pictures of it at http://startrekintorelevance.tumblr.com/ and quite a few more at http://klinfield.tumblr.com/ (my other two blogs), even though it's 2014 stuff.]

Have fun!

What Zachary Quinto Did in 2013

Here is what the amazingly talented and all-around-wonderful Zachary Quinto did in 2013.  I sure hope I got it right, or close to it, because I greatly admire this guy!  All omissions and mistakes are mine and the photo is not.

Sean Gallup, Getty Images
In 2013, Zach co-starred in Star Trek Into Darkness (as Spock), co-starred as a recurring character in four episodes of American Horror Story television series episodes, did the voice of Spock on the Star Trek video game, co-starred in the movie We’ll Never Have Paris (for a 2014 release) and was featured in the television documentary Star Trek Into Darkness Special.   In addition, he and Leonard Nimoy made a commercial for Audi together spiffing on their Spock and Spock relationship – here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPkByAkAdZs.  Zach also participated in the Galway (Ireland) Film Festival, where he did a Q & A for Star Trek Into Darkness and the movie that he Executive Produced in 2012 titled Margin Call.  (http://www.galwayfilmfleadh.com/).  ZQ has dozens of interviews on YouTube.
Zach is currently starring on Broadway in the The Glass Menagerie (as Tom), with an extended run into next year.  The play is getting excellent reviews - http://www.nytimes.com/2013/09/27/theater/reviews/the-glass-menagerie-stars-cherry-jones-and-zachary-quinto.html?_r=0http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/music-arts/glass-menagerie-theater-review-article-1.1467392, and http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/review/glass-menagerie-theater-review-637472.  If you live in NYC and haven’t seen this play (and Waiting for Godot with Sir Patrick Stewart & Sir Ian McKellen), I’d like to give your butt a swift kick, because I’d LOVE a chance to see these plays and am envious of anyone who has been able to go!
Zach served as Executive Producer on two films that came out in 2013, All Is Lost (starring Robert Redford, and which is getting very good reviews - http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/18/movies/all-is-lost-with-robert-redford-at-sea.html?_r=0 and http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/all-is-lost-2013.  He also executive produced the horror flick Banshee Chapter, all with his Before the Door production company.  He also served as Executive Producer on film shorts Lil Women and Big City Bright Lights, and as Producer on Breakup at a Wedding.  Before the Door’s website is http://www.beforethedoor.com/.

He made appearances on Charlie Rose, Live with Kelly & Michael, Alaska Y Mario, Conan, Chelsea Lately, Conan, Entertainment Tonight, Weekend Ticket, Big Morning Buzz Live with Carrie Keagan, Real Time with Bill Maher, Late Night with Jimmy  Fallon, Watch What Happens Live and The Jonathan Ross Show.

What Benedict Cumberbatch Did in 2013

As we come down to the last three cast members of Star Trek Into Darkness, we come to the villain, "Khan" portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch.  This man is having one hell of a good year.  I hope I got all the information right.  As always, mistakes and omissions are mine and the photos are not.

Benedict had a busy year.  Besides playing the villain in Star Trek Into Darkness (as Khan), he voiced Smaug (and the Necromancer) in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and played Sherlock Holmes in the BBC television production Sherlock.  He provided voice talent on a The Simpsons episode and starred in the film short Little Favor (for which he also served as Executive Producer and Producer).  He also co-starred in 12 Years a Slave (which is receiving rave reviews),starred in The Fifth Estate and August: Osage County.  He starred in The Imitation Game, which will be released in 2014, and in The Hobbit: There and Back Again as the Necromancer.  He is currently filming as voice talentThe Penguins of Madagascar and Majik.  He also narrated the documentaryJerusalem.  He participated in the Royal National Theatre’s event for its 50th Anniversary in November.
He has The Lost City of Z and Everest (as George Mallory) in preproduction, with Flying Horse a possibility.
Branching out to radio, he played the Angel Islington in the 2013 BBC Radio 4 adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere.  He also did the BBC Radio 3 adaptation of Michael Frayn’s play Copenhagen (as Werner Heisenberg).  He also turned out to read at a charity event for The Reading Agency (earning my respect due to his mad skills, and my envy since he got to hang out with the glorious and wicked Gillian Anderson); check it out athttp://www.theguardian.com/media/2013/dec/11/benedict-cumberbatch-gillian-anderson-letters-live.
Benedict was nominated for Best Actor in a Mini-Series or TV Movie at the 70thAnnual Golden Globe Awards (for Sherlock), for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie at the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards (for Parade’s End), for a Critic’s Choice Television Award for Best Movie/Miniseries Actor (for Parade’s End), and in November 2013 he was honored by BAFTA Los Angeles with a Britannia Award for British Artist of the Year.He also won the Broadcasting Press Guild Award for Best Actor (for Sherlock and Parade’s End). Not too shabby.
Benedict appeared on Janela Indiscreta, Made In Hollywood, Conan, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Good Morning America, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, The Graham Norton Show, Top Gear, Alaska Y Mario, Big Morning Buzz Live with Carrie Keagan, the Late Show with David Letterman, Daybreak  and Parade’s End: Featurette.  He recorded a song called “Can’t Keep It Inside” for the official soundtrack of August: Osage County.  In addition, there are dozens of interviews online on YouTube.
Good heavens, I’m tired just writing all that out.  When does this man sleep?  Some of his many magazine covers are here http://startrekintorelevance.tumblr.com/post/73107170753/post-two-of-two-of-benedict-cumberbatchs-magazine and here http://startrekintorelevance.tumblr.com/post/73107050843/one-of-two-posts-of-benedict-cumberbatchs.
I do not think Benedict has an official website, but while doing this research I came across this site http://benedict-cumberbatch.net/ which seemed nicely put together.    He does not appear to use Twitter or any other social media publically.  Get online, Ben!  There is a really fun article at  http://www.buzzfeed.com/ellievhall/times-in-2013-benedict-cumberbatch-proved-he-was-king-of.  Long live Benedict!

What Bruce Greenwood Did in 2013

Next up is the wonderful Bruce Greenwood, who played Captain Christopher Pike (and I usually accidentally write "Pine" and have to correct it; what an odd coincidence of casting to have two names so similar).  All mistakes and omissions are mine and the photos are not.

In 2013, Bruce starred in the made for television movies WestsideFeynman: The Challenger (as the Narrator), and The Challenger Disaster.  He had a television role on the show The Unexplained Files (as Narrator).  In film, he had co-starring roles in Devil’s Knot, Star Trek Into Darkness (as Admiral Christopher Pike), Lost Luck, and And Now A Word from Our Sponsor.  He provided the voice of Bruce Wayne/Batman for both the Young Justice animated television series and for the video game Young Justice: Legacy; he also did the voice of Neptune in the video game Call of Duty: Ghosts.
He also managed to find time to squeeze in a play with Director Joe McCandless called the “Ghost Brothers of Darkland County” http://www.ghostbrothersofdarklandcounty.com/ghost-brothers-of-darkland-county-announces-cast-for-tour-with-bruce-greenwood-and-emily-skinner-and-many-more/.
Bruce has two films in post production, Endless Love and WildLike, and one film shot in 2013 for a 2014 release titled The Captive.
I think this Twitter account belongs to Bruce, but he doesn’t appear to be very active and it’s not a verified account https://twitter.com/GreenwoodBruce.
According to the IMDB, he and his wife Susan Devlin live in the Los Angeles area.

What Alice Eve Did in 2013

Read on to discover what Alice Eve - who portrayed Dr. Carol Marcus in Star Trek Into Darkness - did in 2013.  As always, mistakes and omissions are mine and the pictures are not.

In 2013, Alice co-starred in the films Cold Comes the Night, Some Velvet Morning, Decoding Annie Parker and in Star Trek Into Darkness as Dr. Carol Marcus.  She as two films in post production, presumably for 2014 releases, titled Dirty Weekend and 1:30 Train
Alice appeared in the Paul McCartney music video “Queenie Eye” (along with Star Trek co-star Chris Pine) – see it here at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CfLUmVso30 (and the “Making of Queenie Eye”  herehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSAc7JNx2PA). And yes, I’m officially jealous.
It appears that Alice tried using Twitter, didn’t get much help and quit.  Someone help her out!  https://twitter.com/AliceSophiaEve .  She is on Instagram athttp://instagram.com/aliceseve  and/or at http://instagram.com/evexevexeve , though I am not sure how to verify an Instagram account.  She may also have a YouTube channel – but I’m not 100% sure – athttp://www.youtube.com/user/evexevexeve/feed .  Her official website is http://eve-eve-eve.com/about.html (as far as I can tell).  Sorry about the ambiguity; sometimes these things are obvious and sometimes it’s not.
The IMDB says Alice lives in both Los Angeles and London.

Congratulations to Ellen DeGeneres!

My sincere congratulations go out to the wonderful Ellen DeGeneres on her 14th win at the People's Choice Awards!

When I worked on "ellen" in 1998, the year she came out, she got bricks wrapped in hate mail thrown through her living room window and death threats.  A dozen years later, she gets awards.  YES.  You completely deserve all good things that come your way, El.  You are one of  my heroes.  Congratulations.

What Anton Yelchin Did in 2013

Here's what Anton Yelchin did in 2013.  All mistakes and omissions are mine and the picture is not.

In 2013, Anton co-starred in Star Trek Into Darkness (as Pavel Chekov), starred in Odd Thomas (as Odd Thomas), provided the voice of Chekov for the Star TrekVideo Game, Only Lovers Left Alive (as Ian), provided the voice of Clumsy Smurf inThe Smurfs: The Legend of Smurfy Hollow (TV movie), the Smurfs video game, and The Smurfs 2 movie.  He also had roles in Rudderless, Broken Horses, Cymbeline and Burying the Ex, all expected to be released in 2014.  He also narrated the film Unity
